Our Mission
We are dedicated to fighting poverty and hunger
throughout Cook and Lake Counties.
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Chicago has been reaching out in our local communities throughout Cook and Lake Counties since 1857. We have the experience of being a force of good throughout times of war, global pandemics, economic crisis, and social changes. SVdP has helped many with utility bills, rent, food, transportation, and medical expenses, thanks to the generosity and hard work of our Chicagoland Vincentians and dedicated supporters.
These accomplishments reflect a deep commitment to serving our neighbors and strengthening our communities.
We have provided food to countless individuals and families in need throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburban communities through our food pantries, holiday meal basket programs, community dinners, and other outreach events.
We have supplied clothing and essential items to people experiencing homelessness, struggling young families, and veterans working to overcome difficult periods in their lives.
We have helped prevent homelessness by connecting individuals and families with shelters, identifying affordable housing options, and providing short-term rental assistance during times of financial hardship.
Most importantly, we have continued to offer hope, support, and compassion to the most vulnerable members of our communities when they have had nowhere else to turn.
Together, these efforts have helped meet immediate needs, restore dignity, and create pathways toward greater stability and self-sufficience for those we serve.
Upcoming Events
SVdP Chicago Christmas Committee
Magic of Christmas – Christmas in July
When: July 1-31, 2026
Time: N/A
While many are enjoying the summer heat, grilling, and time at the pool, we at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Chicago have our Santa hats on, preparing for the upcoming holidays.
We are committed to serving our neighbors with compassion, dignity, and faith. As a Catholic lay organization, we provide direct assistance to those facing hardship, welcoming individuals from all backgrounds without distinction. Guided by the belief that “No work of charity is foreign to the Society,” we strive to bring hope, love and support to those who need it most.
This holiday season, we will be hosting four special events around Lake and Cook Counties, bringing the Magic of Christmas to children in need with a visit from Santa Claus and his bag full of toys.
We will also be setting up five special Christmas shops for parents we are helping. To maintain their dignity, parents will be invited to shop at no cost to them, for gifts they personally choose for their own child. To make this possible, we are seeking donations of new toys, gift cards, and other contributions or sponsorships to ensure every child experiences the joy and warmth of the season.
Your generosity will directly have an impact on the lives of many children and local families facing financial hardship making the holiday season magical and joy filled.
If you would like to donate brand new toys, both thrift stores have a toy box where you can drop off your donations. We thank you for your kindness and support in helping us bring holiday joy to those in need!

Why I Said Yes to St. Vincent de Paul Chicago
Why Do We Say Yes?
Serving with The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Chicago is more than a commitment, but a purpose. Together, we walk alongside our neighbors, offering hope, support, and human connection where it matters most. Our Board of Directors and District Presidents share their testimonies on why they said yes, and how they see the need and feel called to respond to our Friends in Need.
