Please review Mike Syslo’s message below regarding the requirements for services and rent Landlords paid directly.
—————————————————————
1099 Requirements for Services and for Rent Paid Directly to Landlords
After extensive research and consulting with both the National Council auditor and attorney, the National Council believes that once the total payments made by a Council or Conference for services or for rent payments to a landlord equal or exceed $600 in a calendar year, a Form 1099 must be mailed to the recipient and filed with the IRS.
There are only a few exceptions to this requirement:
Payments made to corporations
Payments made to real estate agents or property managers acting on behalf of a landlord
Payments made to tax-exempt organizations (including governments)
Payments made via a third-party payment network (credit card, debit card or PayPal type service, but this does not include online bill payments)
All other payments for services or for rent payments to a landlord totaling $600 or more in a calendar year will trigger the Form 1099 filing requirement.
Keep in mind that Forms 1099 are filed together for entities sharing an EIN, and if Conferences share an EIN with their Council, the Council will be required to combine all payments made to a service provider or landlord during a calendar year. It is recommended that records be kept of all payments to service providers and landlords, and Forms W-9 be requested and retained before making any service or rent payment, even if the payment is below the $600 limit.
This is only a very brief summary of the rules. Councils and Conferences should review the complete IRS Form 1099 instructions and consult with their tax professionals for additional guidance. Additional materials and example documents are available on the National Council website at https://members.ssvpusa.org/information-for-members/irs-tax-information/.
While some Councils and Conferences may receive differing opinions from their advisors, we recommend that they make sure the source is a knowledgeable professional and that the guidance is well documented and received in writing.
Gentle Reminder: Please make sure copies of 1099s or W9s are mailed toElvia Rojas at Society of St. Vincent de Paul Chicago, 12731 South Wood Street, Blue Island, IL 60406.

As Vincentians and friends, we work together, doing God’s work, to help those in need. Most of our works are focused on those in our community seeking immediate assistance with the necessities of food, clothing, and shelter.
As we watch from afar, the continuum of disasters occurring throughout the United States, it seems never ending. Although outside of our immediate communities, those are our brothers and sisters in need. For that reason, we must come together and provide assistance.
Please consider providing support that will be part of the National Council relief efforts. The National Office has received responses from over 600 Vincentians, Conference and Councils offering to participate in assisting the current disaster relief efforts. We are one of the 600. As we have experienced the support of many other Councils throughout the years, it is time for us to give back and broaden our border of assistance.
I ask that your District or Conference offer a donation. The Central Office will combine all donations received and send one check to the National Office as contribution towards the current Disaster Relief efforts.
Checks should be made payable to: SVdP Chicago Council and mailed to 12731 S. Wood Street, Blue Island IL 60406. Please indicate on memo line National Disaster Appeal.
I appreciate your consideration in participating in this urgent appeal. Together we make a difference. As Vincentians, we are sometimes reminded that those in need although far away are still in reach of receiving our assistance.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Chicago ADC welcomes Teresa Stack as our new Communications Director replacing Jen Ahern effective September 1, 2021.
Teresa comes to us with a strong computer background as well as many years of volunteering and organizing fundraising events. She told us she does not consider this a job. “It is something that I have wanted to do that incorporates my computer experience, working and organizing events, and helping others. It’s perfect”.
Teresa was born and raised a Catholic. Her and her children all attended St. Patricia School in Hickory Hills. Her husband, Mike, attended Little Flower in Chicago. She was on the School Board, Parent’s Club and many years a Secretary for Athletics at St. Patricia. “Being involved when my children were in grammar school was an opportunity that I will always treasure. I was able to raise money for the school, be the “mom” the kids could talk too when they couldn’t talk to their own, and more importantly, make a difference”.
The experience and excitement that Teresa brings to the SVdP community, will continue to support our mission and help us achieve more to help the needy. When not working, she enjoys spending time with her adult children, yearly family fishing vacations in Florida, watching a Cubs game or two and getting together with friends to see what organization they can help out next.
Please join us in welcoming Teresa to the SVdP family.
Join us for a live “Virtual” mass on Sunday, November 21, 2021, at 3 PM on the St. Vincent de Paul YouTube Channel. An awards presentation will immediately follow.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Chicago ADC welcomes Curt Schubert, who will officially take office as Treasurer for the Society on October 1, 2021. During the appointed three-year term, Curt’s goal is to help the Society see success with it’s Strategic Plan of growth. Faith has been the forefront of Curt’s journey through life, both personally and professionally. A De Paul graduate of accounting and a CPA, Curt’s career has always maintained a purposeful position of faith. From Business Director at Lutheran Services to current CFO for Marian High School, Curt’s dedication of faith carries through all aspects of his life. In addition to volunteering as the new Treasurer for the Society, Curt has been a volunteer Religious Education teacher for over 20 years at his parish, St. Fabian in Bridgeview IL as well as being an active SVdP member. Born and baptized Catholic, Curt always recognized his faith, but was drawn more closely to God’s works later in life. “I believe God works in our lives in mysterious and subtle ways to bring us to where He needs us most”. Looking forward to an annual “coffee meeting” with a former business associate, is where Curt was told of the volunteer position and how he may be just the right person. After pondering and praying a few days, Curt knew God was calling him to this position. “Not everyone gets to see a vision on the wall, or witnesses a weeping statue of Mary, my vision comes from within other people. I live by the gospel “Love God, Love your Neighbor”, and to me that means your neighbor is everyone you meet and everywhere you meet them.” Dedicated to his faith, family and community, the Society is very excited to welcome Curt to the SVdP family. When not working, and giving back, Curt enjoys sports, both watching the White Sox and coaching our young future leaders.
When you donate with SVdP Chicago, you change lives! Used clothing, household goods, furniture no longer needed, old craft supplies, new items that were never worn, gifts we could not use but forgot to return. They make a difference every day!
Our thrift stores serve as the destination for receiving, processing, and selling those donations. Our prices are low so that those looking to find quality goods on a tight budget can be provided for. Those that are struggling and have come to us for help, when qualified, receive a voucher to shop our stores at no cost, with dignity and respect. We do not group items as other thrift stores do. All items are available to all that need, every day! We also provide jobs and skill training, giving those who need the opportunity the most possibilities of a better tomorrow. SVdP Chicago works with local organizations to help provide needed items such as, blankets and clothing to BEDS and other homeless shelters, baby items for mothers in need, and school supplies for low income families. Blankets and towels not suitable for use can find a home at a local animal shelter. At the end of the day, after the light bill is paid and our basic costs for operating our stores are covered, proceeds from your donations are used to support our volunteer led programs that help those in need in Lake and Cook Counties. With over 33 food pantries, community dinners and food trucks, we fulfill the need for those who are food insecure. Whether it is assisting a family with utility bills, medical bills, rent, groceries, or helping a homeless family have a place to sleep, the Society is there!
